WWII Marine Corps Veteran Coming Home to Rest After 83 Years

Rich - 3/26/2026

I have a request

We have a Marine Corps Veteran finally coming home to rest.

PFC Norton V. Retzsch

WW2 US Marine Corps

C Co, 1st Raider BN, 1 Raider Reg,

1st Marine Division 1st Amphibious Corps

He appears to be one of the Original Marine Raiders assigned to "Edson's Raiders" one of, if not the very first actual Spec Ops for the US military.

PFC Retzsch joined the Marine Corps in 1941.

Became a Marine Raider in 1942.

Was listed as MIA July 9, 1943, during the Solomon Islands Campaign. From my research this time frames he was likely involved in the Guadalcanal, Tarawa campaign as well as the Solomons.

His remains were discovered in an unmarked grave with several hundred Military members killed in that campaign. His remains were finally able to be positively Identified by DPAA through DNA testing.

The Marine Corps Casualty Unit from Quantico, VA was able to notify next of kin and have assigned I&I out of the Marine Corps Reserve Unit in Tucson. They will be conducting the Honor Detail at the Service. The service will be held on April 13, 2026, and begin at 10:00 A.M. at the Marana Mortuary located at 12146 West Barnett Road, Marana, AZ. Then the remains will be escorted to the Marana Veterans Memorial Cemetery at 15950 North Luckett Road, Marana, AZ for the Honors Ceremony at 12:00 P.M.  There will be designated motorcycle parking in the parking area behind the overflow lot.

There are currently several Military Vets MC and Associations attending, VFW, American Legion, Disabled Veterans and other Veterans organizations to pay our respect to and honor not only his selfless sacrifice but his families as well. His wife Joined the US Marine Corps as well once he was listed as MIA.

We want to show the respect these veterans deserve and the way we took care of our brothers and sisters while on active duty and now as Veteran's (we all know there are large numbers of military vets we ride with every day and stand back-to-back with in a law enforcement capacity).

Please feel free to D M me if your club or any members are available to make the funeral.
